Spiritual Music CD: Dreams & Visions by Mary-Kathryn
Dreams & Visions by Mary-Kathryn is an album that is a spiritual listening experience. I’m sometimes suspicious of those artists who use only a first name and hyphenated at that. But in the case of Mary-Kathryn, she is an artist par excellence. Released by Rhythm House Records, and listed often as World music, I feel it is placed in the wrong genre. It is spiritual music that will appeal to Christians and anyone who seeks a contact with a Higher Power in the universe and wishes to feel more universal love.
Unlike so many spiritual or Christian “Top 40esque” releases, Dreams and Visions is anything but run of the mill. Nor it is “church music” even though some of the cuts will be familiar to those who have a background in traditional churches. But the fire, passion, and warmth of the rich voice of Mary-Kathryn makes this body of work unique and uplifting in a world where uplifting is so very rare.
With 10 vibrant cuts, including This Is My Father’s World, the traditional hymn, Wailing Wall, a reference to the remaining Temple foundation wall in Jerusalem, there is no tune on this album you will not love.
As Mary-Kathryn’s fourth release, Dreams & Visions blends together influences of pop, rock, folk, and traditional spirituals to create a work that is truly outside the envelope. Hugh Marsh provides violin; Chapman Stick and Bass are played by Fergus Marsh; drums and percussion are provided by Tony Morra. And Mary-Kathryn provides the most important instrument of all — her lush, soothing yet passionate voice.
We’ve all heard those advertisements on television for 40 spiritual cuts for $19.95 featuring hymns, praise tunes, and choruses. Do not expect Dreams & Visions to have a single thing in common with those infomercial type productions. This quality music will be loved by soul-seekers, Christians, World music lovers alike will want to own this album and give it as gifts to friends and family.
