The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die by John Izzo Ph.D.
The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die by John Izzo Ph.D. is truly a book of great value to every reader. Published by Berrett-Koehler, the 163 pages are filled with enlightenment that can be applied to anyone’s life in very many positive ways.
It’s not that the Five Secrets are really all that secret. In fact, they are mainly common sense suggestions that most of us fail to apply into our busy, oft unfulfilled lives. These secrets are keys to true happiness and living a life of which we can be proud, feeling deep satisfaction with who and what we are. In other words, it teaches how anyone can feel comfortable inside their own skin.
While all too often books of this nature are filled with fluffy words and lots of psychology that you have to be a Ph.D. to understand, Izzo’s work explains in very simple and extremely practical steps how to go about understanding these Five Secrets and applying them into your daily life.
Part of the practicality of The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die is that each of the chapters which present the secrets ends with four or five straightforward questions which one can ask oneself to determine how close or how far one is from understanding and living that key secret.
So, how did Izzo learn these secrets? He located over 200 people who had found lasting happiness in their own lives and interviewed them. The Five Secrets are the results of the common threads at the forefront of each of these people’s happy, satisfying lives. Many of the interviewees had suffered severe trauma and persecution–for example, Holocaust survivors–yet they felt they had satisfying, happy lives with real meaning.
The final section of the book is titled “The Secret to Life in One Sentence or Less.” These snippets come from the interviews and if the book contained nothing but these rules that happy people have chosen to live by, it would be an investment well worth the money and time to read it again and again. For example, one 101-year old lady said, “Stay busy; never be bored; always find five more things to do.” Another said, “Love yourself and the rest will follow.” What profound statements that can really, truly be useful when applied to our lives on a daily basis. There are dozens and dozens of these snippets that are moving and meaningful.
You’ll find The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die to run the full gamut from moving to funny, tearful to joyful. And all of the work is very thought provoking. Anyone who doesn’t feel they are living life to the absolute fullest–and who can really say they are doing that — will benefit greatly from John Izzo’s latest work.
