An in depth book review of The Mystery of 2012: Predictions, Prophecies, and Possibilities

As you read the book you take a journey with twenty-five renowned experts offering their insight on the questions surrounding 2012.
Are We All Going to Die?
I plunked this book down on the counter at my favorite taco stand and the cute young girl at the register asked, “oh, is that book about like the end of the world like the Aztecs and their you know predictions and stuff”.
“Well yes, something like that” I replied, being too hungry to become much more engaged than that.
In lieu of taking my order she went on, “Are we all gonna like die and shit in 2012?”
“We are all going to die, but probably not all in 2012. It will no doubt be much more random than that. I’ll tell you more about it after I eat.”
Thus goes most conversation about 2012; equally divided between gloom and doom of biblical proportions and the crystal/feather crowd expecting us to become light-bodies impervious to pain, overdue rent, and crashing hard drives. In between is a broad spectrum of interpretations regarding the meaning of the Mayan calendar and what will happen on winter solstice, December 21 2012.
This book, The Mystery of 2012, explores some of the most well researched and articulated opinions, interpretations, history and predictions swirling around that most intriguing date. Contained are more than two dozen essays from the likes of Gregg Braden, Barbara Marx Hubbard, José Argüelles, Jean Huston and Daniel Pinchbeck.
Gregg Braden – Alignment of the Galactic Center
Gregg Braden leads off with a treat for the more scientifically minded among us discussing the once-in-26,000 years phenomena of an alignment of the galactic center, our sun and the earth.
How could the Maya track this so perfectly? The calendar seems to have been born fully formed. Nothing in the archaeological record shows any gradual development.
Also, at the time of the alignment the sun is predicted, by scientific measure, to reach a peak of solar flair and sunspot activity corresponding to a nadir in the strength of the earth’s magnetic field. The planet is physically ripe for dramatic change and Braden posits the change will be spiritual as well.
Karl Maret – Age of Aquarius
An astrological view is presented by Karl Maret who takes a look at the Age of Aquarius, the fate of the USA and the cycles of Saturn.
Dating from 1776, our nations birth, Saturn will complete 8 full cycles around the zodiac in the year 2012. “. . . the United States, as a nation, will . . . have matured in building an eight-spoked medicine wheel of its sacred destiny.” In the next chapter Corinne McLaughlin asks, “Are you stuck in fear and dread about looming disasters culminating in 2012?” She then outlines how “. . . each and every one of us is facing a great soul choice: which path will we take in the coming years of upheaval and change?” Her challenge to us – engage in “socially responsible business and non-adversarial politics” keeping an eye on the “triple bottom line” “a commitment to ‘people, planet, and profit”’.
Barbara Marx Hubbard – Evolution of Consciousness
A Vision for Humanity is Barbara Marx Hubbard’s gift to us in her essay of that name. She tracks the evolution of consciousness and notes that “Problems are evolutionary drivers” and that “Homo sapiens is giving birth within many of us to a more ‘universal human’, a human who will eventually be as different from us as we are from the Neanderthal”.
“How do we get ready for 2012?” she asks. “”Realize that the higher self, the inner voice, is you.” and “Follow the compass of joy. Seek out those who affirm the highest in you.”
Wholeness, Unity, and Interconnection
This book is a wonderful companion, each essay a brilliant exposition of a different facet of the 2012 mystery. An elaborate mystery, but not beyond our grasp if we reach beyond preconceptions, allow our greater selves free rein in what Jean Huston calls “jump time”. I’ll leave you with a gem from James O’Dea’s concluding essay, You Were Born for Such a Time as This.
“The phenomenon we are discussing is not an ideological counter to the status quo; it is to be understood more accurately as a quickening in the center of our being-a quickening less susceptible to fear arousing, not conditioned by the gratifications of competitive advantage, but stimulated by experiences of wholeness, unity, and interconnection. It is what philosophers and theologians call the emergence of nondual consciousness.”

It is said in the Bible that not even the Angels know the date or time when the judgment will occur. Not even the Son of God! But read and study all the writings written in revelations. Is it really hard to understand? We believe so much in the unknown. Do you really think that all the cultures who have predicted such the same revelations just thought it up? How was it possible for all the cultures to record such information when you think about the different parts of the world that separated them all? It’s sad that we believe more on what was chiseled on the walls as compared to what was written in a book. Someone much more knowledgeable gave this information. Who, what, and where from? But you know what get’s me about all this is that so many people, particularly those who don’t believe in God’s inspirational word’s written in the Bible, seem to describe the same type of sufferings as described in the holy book. My faith continues, always will be with God. Good luck to the rest of you.
Comment that each story was interesting and some insightful, good reading. The links could keep you busy for hours.
Thanks John, for your comment. We are adding more 2012 information this week, so check back! You also might like to add a few comments to this page, quite a discussion going on > End of World Predictions
I am sorry John, but what was chiseled on walls as you put it came way before what was written in books. Yes we are all going to die, but are we so small minded to think that God was the only one to foresee the end of the world. Our bodies are but a shell we inhabit. Our souls will live on forever. Fretting about the end is pointless. Trying to be a good and pure person in this life time is a goal that we all should be working for. So when the end does come for us, Dec 12,2012 or tomorrow remember, it your soul that will be moving on to the next phase of your great journey. Peace be with you.
Isn’t it interesting that the Mayan Calendar runs out at the end of the hurricane season of 2012?

Why worry about tomorrow when we are here today. Everyone still needs to live life normal. If life ends it ends, and we still need to pay our bills, and live everyday as if it is our last.
Dear Samantha nice opinion, but 90% of the whole world was asking is there any fact behind this December 21 2012 prediction? Each and every person including me are waiting for the answer.
No God is real please. Please I don’t know how much I can stress it. Our father will never let us down. He will come in a big big way please believe it. As it was said, I am going to pray for all.
I don’t mean any harm, but what you speak of is the God of your belief. Other people were here before the teachings you speak of, keep faith in yourself and let others do as they believe.
This is where the humanity ends for all the wrong things we have done. As we are not friendly to nature why would nature be? We did not see the real power of nature. We are nothing in front of nature. I hope that the day will come soon.
That’s a like big mystery yet to be unveiled, but whatever has to happen shall happen. So be optimistic, and lead a joyful life ahead leaving behind all worries.
To all out there, I have not read any comment from religious organization of their regarding this predictions or prophesies. Where do they stand? In my own opinion, we enjoy our life on how we perform it.
The last I heard on the event was that the Mayan calender dates were possibly off. That would be a big relief, if true I can now look forward to a bright future.
Sorry Walt, but you’re not off the hook even if the date is off a few years or 100. It’s not what will happen on that particular date, but what the date symbolizes; a transition from the 4th great age to the 5th. The forms and world views that are no longer working–financial systems, how we coexist with nature and each other, dominance and acquisition–are collapsing and ushering in a new world.
Curtis, you really summarized well in so few words this vast topic. You understanding leaves me excited and hopeful for our future! Thank you so much!
The end of this world will happen, as it can not go based on the destruction of it. The years of taking and not returning will take its toll. There were things of this world that were not to be touched or used for personal gain. However this world is based upon that thinking, keep taking until there is no more.
People have forgotten to take what is only needed. The greed of the those that only want for themselves. The oil taken from the earth can never be replaced. It is there for a reason. To create a power that was never yours to create, nuclear power will be the demise of this plant, they have found no way of getting rid of the waste. The original people of this place called earth only used the things that could be returned, without marring it. Leaving little or no trace. Now when city falls they dump the garbage in the ocean. killing themselves as they kill the life that provides life. All over paper money, a thing that can not feed anyone. This paper clothe will only be good for starting a fire one day. These predictions will come to truth when the cycle of life no longer exists. It is the technology that will kill everyone and is killing everyone. Yes I use this medium to provide opinion, only because I was forced to assimilate to this world. Told we could not live in the era of the new age. When the lights go out and the people forgot how to live, those are the ones that will die. There is no God that will or can correct this. There is only the people that create life itself. That is why we were given the responsibility to be the care takers of this world. To hunt fish and become part of the balance. The balance of this world created due to greed for power. Now that you have this power fix things and bring back the animals, fish, insects, and the clean air we breath.
